Leonie Lacouette Clocks - Where Sculptural Art and Timekeeping Meet
Leonie Lacouette is an acclaimed American clockmaker whose work blends sculptural beauty with precise function. For more than 40 years, she has created handcrafted timepieces that feel like modern art you can live with every day. With a foundation in aesthetic training from art school at SUNY New Paltz, Lacouette brings an artist’s eye to materials, balance, and form, while never losing sight of what a clock must do: keep time reliably.
Her path into clockmaking began in the most practical way possible. She needed a clock for her own studio. After ordering clock mechanisms and building her first few handmade designs, the results were immediate. Those early clocks sold out right away, and she has been dedicated to the craft ever since.
A Rural Studio and a Calm Point of View
Today, Lacouette works from a tranquil studio in upstate New York, in Gardiner in the Mid-Hudson Valley. The quiet of the landscape shows up in her designs. She often describes a contrast between her youth spent in the energy of midtown Manhattan and the slower, more intentional pace of her current surroundings. That shift is reflected in her clocks: composed, minimal, and calming, yet still full of personality.
Materials That Feel Warm and Modern
Her pieces are crafted using rich, lasting materials such as wood, stainless steel, and her highly recognizable hand-colored copper patinas. Each surface has depth and character, with subtle variations that make every clock feel unique.
Design Philosophy: Form Meets Function
Lacouette’s signature style brings together two ideas that do not always share the same room: the clean geometry of Minimalism and a warm, approachable palette with an organic feel. Circles, squares, and rectangles become a simple visual language, layered into compositions that feel both modern and timeless.
A Clock That Does Not Control the Room
Many of her handcrafted wall and pendulum clocks are intentionally designed without numbers. This is not an omission. It is a statement. Her philosophy is that time should not feel controlling or overly strict. Instead, her clocks act as kinetic sculpture, gently reminding us to stay present and appreciate the moment.
As she puts it: she is a mechanic as well as an artist. These pieces need to function, after all.
