About Native Earth Husband/wife team, Andreas & Lori Kalt, have been making unique stone home décor for seven years now. Their once home-based business, Native Earth, specializes in making hand-crafted “usable art” such as picture frames, clocks, mirrors & more. They use various stones & metal to create their products, however slate is the preferred medium. Nature is their main influence in the design process. They begin by sketching out ideas on paper, and then digitizing the designs into the computer. After deciding what kind of materials to use for each piece, an extremely high-pressure water saw is used to cut the material precisely. Each piece is then assembled by hand. Various finishing techniques are used to enhance the natural color of the stone. Andreas is a Utah native, who’s always enjoyed sports, the outdoors, & designing things. In high school he spent much of his time in art and CAD classes. Not surprisingly, he later earned a B.F.A. in Industrial Design from Brigham Young University. Since then, he has been involved with design projects ranging from floor designs for the Disney Land resort to making simple “address signs” for his neighbors. Lori grew up in Deer Park, Washington. Although not formally trained in the arts, she has claimed since a child that her favorite thing to do was “make things”. Enjoying left-brained activities as well, however, she later earned a B.S. degree in mathematics from Brigham Young University. After spending several years as a math-writer, teacher, and/or tutor, Lori is now a stay-at-home mom
